I've been looking for an addition to my current Hi-Fi rig for awhile, but when you already have a nice turntable, cassette deck and CD changer you don't have many other options as far as consumer audio goes, which is why when I found this MiniDisc deck at a thrift store for I had to get it.
When powered on the display cycled rapidly between saying 'Welcome' and 'Eject' and made a terrible grinding gears noise. Some research online led me to this how-to on correcting this common problem. It was quite simple to do and now the unit runs flawlessly.
The display isn't broken, in this photo the deck was alternating between the word 'NEW' and the remaining time on the disc, because it was in recording mode. The camera caught it between cycles.sony minidisc mds je320
