The Volvo 780 Coupé debuted at the International Auto Show in Geneva, Switzerland in 1985, marking Volvo's return to the two-door coupé market following the departure of the 262C in 1981. The 780 became available in Europe in 1986 and in United States a year later.
Like its predecessor, the 780 was designed and built by Carrozzeria Bertone in Turin, Italy. The hood, trunk, and roof lines were all slightly lower than the standard 700 series profile, and the C-pillar was wider and had a more gradual slope down to the trunk.
Volvo's official production total for the 780 is 8,518 cars built between 1986 and 1991. As before, a coupé would remain absent from Volvo's model line for several years, until the front-wheel drive C70 premiered in 1995 for the following model year.

Der Wagen wurde im März 1985 auf dem Genfer Automobilsalon als mittelbarer Nachfolger des bis Frühjahr 1982 produzierten Volvo 262C vorgestellt und bei Bertone in Italien bis September 1990 gefertigt. Nach Angaben von Volvo wurden 8.518 Stück hergestellt.
Der Volvo 780 war als Coupé-Ableger des Volvo 760 in Deutschland und anderen Märkten nicht offiziell erhältlich, da Volvo bei einem angepeilten Verkaufspreis von seinerzeit etwa 100.000 DM keine Marktchancen für das Fahrzeug sah. Zudem erreichte der nur 147 PS starke V6-Motor B280F mit G-Kat, der zumeist im 780 verbaut wurde, hinsichtlich Laufkultur und Leistung nicht den Stand deutscher Konkurrenzmodelle von Mercedes-Benz und BMW.
Technisch basierte der Wagen auf dem Volvo 760, das äußere Erscheinungsbild sowie das Interieur mit Holzvertäfelung dagegen wurden von Bertone entworfen. Einzigartig war damals die 4 Kanal-Stereoanlage mit einem elektronischen 7-Band Grafik Equalizer und 120 Watt Verstärker.
