These people are sociopaths. They have no feelings of guilt or remorse. They can pass a polygraph, despite being guilty.

Sociopaths are not limited to killers. They can be your neighbors, your politicians, even your family members. They live a life of deception in order to achieve their goals, even if only for money and power. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to accept the imperfections of an imperfect world. That’s certainly no consolation to the victims in Colorado, living or deceased.

The best way to describe people like Colorado shooter James Holmes is they are actors. They are people with deep-seated disturbances who live in two worlds — the real world and their own world behind closed doors. They are able to fool us all.

In the real world, they go about work, school and play as though completely normal, one of us. They laugh, they strive, they love. Many times, during my 30 years on the job at Miami-Dade Police Department, I heard the words, “He seemed like such a nice boy!”

Serial killer Ted Bundy seemed like a nice boy.

But when the door closes behind them and the rest of the world is shut out, they wallow in fantasy. Some are sexually based. Some are hate or power based. A Jihad terrorist blows up innocent people based on a religious and/or political calling.

Others are inexplicable. Thus, the Colorado shooter.

James Holmes will become the subject of media pundits and experts across the country with every hypothesis imaginable trying to determine where the blame lies. What made him go crazy? What about parents? Drugs? Most of all, why didn’t anyone see the signs?

The world has seven billion people, and the U.S. has 310 million of them. We cannot monitor every human being.

Holmes might have been a loner, a weirdo, a non-conformist, but none of these traits is illegal nor reason to bring someone in for psychiatric testing. Having never been arrested, he slipped through the proverbial cracks.

Ted Bundy, who did not always sexually assault his victims, was a bright law student with good looks and a mountain of charm. A typical Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he lived a life fooling everyone, normal as apple pie. He used trust to accomplish his goals. When those doors closed behind him, he lived in fantasyland, pondering where and how to carry out the impulses that drove him to violent behavior.

Pro- and anti-gun warriors are coming out to defend and/or to condemn guns in America. The Second Amendment is here to stay, though it’s not impossible to pass laws that restrict the nature of guns people can buy and own. It isn’t sensible that average citizens can own assault weapons of mass destruction that are intended for military conflict.

I came to know hundreds of violent criminals during my police career. Most had a conscience. The most dangerous were the ones without one, because they were just like you and me.

Drew Peterson shocked an Illinois courtroom Thursday, shouting 'I did not kill Kathleen!' before he was sentenced to 38 years in prison in the death of his third wife.

Justice served: Former Illinois police officer Drew Peterson was sentenced to 38 years in prison for murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004

One of Kathleen's Savio's relatives in the court audience responded by shouting back, 'Yes, you did.' That person was then removed from the Joliet courtroom.

Peterson's outburst came as a judge was preparing to sentence him for murdering Savio in 2004. Illinois does not have the death penalty, and the 59-year-old Peterson had faced a maximum of 60 years behind bars.

The dramatic moment followed emotional impact statements from the victim's family, who spoke about the pain of their loss.

Savio’s sister Anna Marie Savio-Doman told the judge: 'My loss of my baby sister is beyond words.

'There will be no more birthday parties, backyard gatherings, holiday celebrations or other family activities to share. The laughter, hugs, guidance, advice, sense of security and those opportunities to say, "I love you" are forever gone.'

Chicago Tribune reported that Peterson, who did not testify during the trial, addressed the judge by saying: 'Good day, my name is Drew Peterson. I hope I don't aggravate the situation here, but I have a lot of things to be said." Then he screamed, 'I did not kill Kathleen!'

After being scolded by Judge Edward Burmila for making outbursts 'designed to aggravate people,' the convicted killer issued an apology.

'I'm sorry, your honor. I must have been woozy,' Peterson said.

The disgraced police officer went on to accuse the state police of falsifying reports and ignoring or misplacing evidence that could have proved his innocence.

'What they did uncover was rumors, gossip, outrageous lies and, most importantly, unreliable hearsay. Hearsay that pierced three privileges that have stood for centuries,' Peterson lamented.

Earlier in the day, Peterson's current legal team had argued for a new trial on grounds his former lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, botched the case, but Judge Burmila denied the motion.

Jurors convicted Peterson in September in the death of Savio, whose body was found in a dry bathtub with a gash on her head. Peterson is also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, but hasn't been charged in that case.

Peterson's current legal team had argued that Brodsky failed to adequately defend the former Bolingbrook police sergeant. Brodsky stepped down from the defense team in November as the lawyerly strife worsened.

Among the accusations from Steve Greenberg, who was on the trial team and still represents Peterson, is that Brodsky forced Peterson to stage a pretrial media blitz that harmed the ex-officer's cause.

Greenberg maintained that Brodsky made a decision on his own to call divorce lawyer Harry Smith as witness, a move that badly backfired on the defense. Brodsky has insisted the entire legal team agreed on trial strategy.

Smith told jurors that Stacy Peterson asked him just before she vanished about whether she could squeeze her husband for more money if she threatened to tell police he murder Savio three years earlier.

Brodsky wanted Smith to blunt Stacy Peterson's credibility. Instead, he succeeded in stressing she sincerely thought her husband killed Savio. Several jurors said his testimony persuaded them to convict Peterson.

Drew Peterson's 2012 trial was the first in Illinois history where prosecutors built their case on hearsay thanks in part to a new law, dubbed ‘Drew's Law,’ tailored to the case. The hearsay, prosecutors said, let his wives ‘speak from their graves’ through family and friends.

The hearsay — any information reported by a witness not based on the witness' direct knowledge — included a friend who said Savio told her Peterson once put a knife to her throat and warned her, ‘I could kill you and make it look like an accident.’

Before his 2009 arrest, the glib, cocky Peterson seemed to taunt authorities, suggesting a ‘Win a Date With Drew Contest’ and then, after his arrest, ‘Win a Conjugal Visit With Drew Contest.’ More recently, his story inspired a TV movie starring Rob Lowe.

The case began with a gruesome discovery. A neighbor came across Savio's body March 1, 2004. She was face down in her dry bathtub, her thick, black hair soaked in blood and a two-inch gash was on the back of her head.

The drowning death of the 40-year-old aspiring nurse was initially deemed an accident. After Peterson's fourth wife, 23-year-old Stacy Peterson, vanished in 2007, Savio's body was exhumed, re-examined and her death reclassified as a homicide.

Drew Peterson had divorced Savio a year before her death. His motive for killing her, prosecutors said, was fear that a pending settlement would wipe him out financially.

Fascination nationwide with the case arose from speculation that Peterson sought to parlay three decades of law enforcement.
.
.

MURDER AND NOT AN ACCIDENT: THE CASE OF KATHLEEN'S DEATH

The biggest challenge facing prosecution attorneys was that because Peterson's third wife's death was originally deemed an accident, very scant evidence was ever collected let alone stored until they decided to reopen the case after his fourth wife Stacy disappeared.

As a result, much of the testimony in the case was hearsay.

A neighbor found Kathleen Savio's body on March 1, 2004, face down in a dry bathtub of her suburban home outside Chicago.

Her thick black hair was blood-soaked and she had a 2-inch gash on the back of her head.
The drowning death of the 40-year-old aspiring nurse was initially deemed an accident - a freak slip in the tub.

Some of the testimony from Savio's friends painted a grim portrait of her relationship with he husband.
Kristen Anderson testified that Savio told her Peterson once warned her at knife point, 'I could kill you and make it look like an accident.'

Savio so feared for her life that she kept a knife under her mattress.

A former co-worker of Peterson's, Jeff Pachter, testified that Peterson offered him ,000 to hire a hit man to kill Savio, though he never followed throu

STACY IS STILL MISSING: HOW THE DISAPPEARANCE CAUSED THE TRIAL

Peterson was 26 years older than his fourth wife when they married, only eight days after his third divorce was finalized.

.

Four years later, the 23-year-old went missing in 2007.

This disappearance prompted Illinois State Police and the FBI to investigate, and they later had Savio's body exhumed, re-examined and her death reclassified as a homicide.

When her sister called the police reporting Stacy's disappearance, Peterson said that she had called him several days before and said that she left him for another man.

Her car was found at the International Airport.

One of the biggest aspects in the case of her disappearance was the issue of whether or not he disposed of her body in a large blue container, three of which he bought prior to when she went missing.

Stacy Peterson's family hoped a conviction in Savio's murder could lead to charges against Drew Peterson in Stacy's disappearance.

Stacy's pastor, Neil Schori, testified she told him that her husband got up from bed and left their house in the middle of the night around the time of Savio's death.
