Russian rail cars (maybe everybody else's as well, but I am only familiar with the Russian ones) are complete houses on wheels. They have their own heating system with a combination of electric and coal-fired boilers. They can provide reasonable living conditions for their passengers ever if rolled out in the middle of nowhere and left there for many days.
I stared at these diagrams every time I travelled in these cars, but never had the gumption to understand them. On a recent trip to St. Pete, I had my camera with me and copied them for later. Have fun.
