My somewhat-trusty Fellowes T7CM shredder bit the dust on Sunday after five years of service. I opened it up to see if there was anything I could fix--it sounded like a gear may have just popped off, and, hey, it was out of warranty--and this is what I found. The odd thing about the gears that stripped is that they were the only plastic ones in the entire machine--the rest were metal. Considering the overall build of the shredder seemed to be fairly robust, I kind of wonder if these two plastic gears actually represent an intentional effort to make the shredder fail after a specific period of use. (It sounds like I'm not the only one who has run into this issue.)
I managed to shatter the plastic housing when trying to open it up--there was a fifth screw that I didn't find until it was too late--so by the time I found the stripped gear the process was more academic than anything else. Regardless, I probably won't be replacing this shredder with another model from Fellowes. The T7CM jammed easily, even on a few sheets of paper, and had to rest four minutes for every two minutes of use. I kind of wonder how long it would've lasted if not for those plastic gears, though.fellows shredders
